Window smasher fined

Casio Crawford was yesterday ordered to pay a fine of $25,000 or spend three months in prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for smashing the glass windows of a man’s house for the second time in four months.

The 27-year-old man of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara, had entered a guilty plea to the charge of malicious damage to property when acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

He admitted that on December 22, at Public Road, Kitty, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged two glass windows valued $20,000, property of Ronald Surujbally.

Prosecutor Telford stated that on the day of the incident Surujbally was at home when he heard a loud noise. When he made checks of the area that the noise had come from he observed the windows broken and Crawford standing near his house.

He then made a report of the incident to the police station and Crawford was later arrested and charged with the offence.

Surujbally, who was also present in court, stated that this was the second time in four months that Crawford broke his windows. He said that the only difference this time was that he chose another section of the house windows to break.

When asked by the magistrate why he committed the act, Crawford stated “cause they eating out me thing….look me ain’t know”.

He was later escorted out of the courtroom by a policeman.
