After weeks of tough talk of who’s going to knock out who and who’s going beat who to a pulp, the S and S Promotions ‘final execution’ boxing card is finally here and tonight the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be ground zero.
Out of the five fights carded for the night, it is the clashes between Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen and Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes, Leon ‘Hurry-Up’ Moore and Dexter Marques which will be the most intriguing.
Both fights are for the national titles with Gilkes/Allen going for the Vacant Super/Middleweight title and Moore battling Marques for his Bantamweight title.
It’s been over a year and a half since Allen fought on local soil with his record standing at nine flawless fights, five of which ended with his opponents not recovering from knock-downs and it was based on this account that local pundits are saying that eyes should be kept closely on the 24-year-old.
But Gilkes out of 17 fights has only won four, drawing three while the other ten saw him losing mostly by knock-outs. As a matter of fact, Gilkes has lost his last seven fights but this time around he’s out to redeem himself.
Allen was based overseas under the watchful eyes of Guyanese world
renowned trainer Colin Morgan and during his stint he was the sparring partner for Bernard Hopkins and Glen Johnson.
He has predicted taking Gilkes out in the fourth of their 12-round title clash stating that the ‘Lion’ is no match for him and he would have even fought him for free just for his bragging.
But Gilkes had wagered $100,000 that Allen could not take him out in four rounds and stated that he will come out on top.
Meanwhile a bitter war is expected between Marques and Moore with the latter saying that he doesn’t care about winning the belt, but wants to teach the young Marques a lesson in boxing.
Moore is rated ninth in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and also holds the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) and NABA bantamweight titles and stepping back to fight Marques is a “waste of time” but one which he says he will have pleasure with.
He once held the national title but vacated it in 2007 after taking up world ranking status and championships however, Marques says that tonight he would certainly have to prove his mettle and he is coming out hard.
The young and sharp looking Kwesi Jones will be aiming to keep a perfect record when he faces Dexter De Clou in their four rounds encounter.
Jones stepped on the professional scene in dramatic fashion by beating Randy Tello of Linden.
41 year-old boxing sensation Debby ‘Tiger’ Tyson will face her toughest challenge in only her second professional fight when she comes up against Sharon Ward of Linden.
Tyson who is just as ferocious as her namesake, former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, had stopped Avlon Scotland who is also ironically from Linden.
Ward however, is looking for liberation in her own right after losing her last fight which took her record to three losses with as many wins.
