George, Straker crowned U-18 champions

– Forde, Morgan grace event and secure wins

Athetes Trevon George and Jevina Straker took the champion titles of the under-18 category at the two-day National Youth, Junior and Seniors Championships which ended yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.

George and Straker ended with 20 points each while in the under-20 category, sprinter Nadine Rodrigues, with 10 points and Kevin Bailey with 20 points took the female and male title respectively.

And in the senior category, Ederle Castello with 24 points was declared women’s champion while Alton Seaforth and Ronald Payne shared the men’s title, having amassed 20 points each.

George, with two  wins in the 1500m and the 800m races  and a second position in the 400m edged out Ruralites’ Chavez Ageday, who also accumulated 20 points.

In the 1500m, the Mercury Fast Laners’ (MFL) athlete, ran 4:24.40s to edge out Enmore’s Malcolm Walcott (4:24.40s) by a mere millisecond, while Rising Star’s Chavez Sital, eased to third place with a 4:35.40s time.

In the 800m, George ran 2:12.60s to again suppress Hampton Games gold medalist Walcott, who ran 2:12.90s.
Kareem Mann (2:16.60s) was third.

George was finally overpowered in the 400m after Stephon James’ ran 51.70 seconds to George’s 53.30s.

George’s club mate and national junior table tennis player, Nigel Bryan, was third in 54 seconds.

Ageday won the 100m with a personal best time of 10.70 seconds while Cortez Fraser was second in 11.40s and Parrish Cadogan, who finished 0.20 seconds behind Fraser, third.

In the 200m, Ageday, with 21.90 seconds won from James who clocked 22.50s.

Cortez was third in 23.80s.

Straker, the dual CARIFTA Games gold medalist ran 5:12.30s to win the 1500m with Jenella Jonas (5:41.00s) and Tisha Grimes (5:55.00s) second and third respectively.

Straker followed up with a 2:24.40s win in the 800m with Jonas second in 2:39.10s.

Third place went to Grimes in 2.41.00s.

Double wins in the 1500m and 800m was a trend which extended to the under-20 category as Bailey copped both to earn his champion boy title.

The Police Sports Club (PSC) athlete ran 2:03.30s in the 800m to defeat club mate  Kelvin Ceres 2:05.60s while Mandella Collins also of PSC took third place in 2:07.20s.

Bailey then captured the 1500m in 4:56.70s ahead of Akeem Benjamin, who ran 4:40.50s.

Rodrigues won the only under-20 female event of the competition: the 200m clocking 27 seconds flat.

She finished 1.20 seconds ahead of second place finisher Akelia Alves, while Javauna Langford clocked 29.10 seconds for third.

Latoya Rodney won the discus event with a throw of 29.33m while Donna Ferguson (25.58m) was second and Natasha Albert, 22.22m third.

Castello won the javelin event with a throw of 18.03m, with Rodney, 17.43m, second, and Albert, 15.14m, third.
PSC’s Amanda Herman-stine won the shot put event with a throw of 7.99m. Albert was second with 7.20m and Castello, third, 7.06m.

Ronald Payne won the male discus event with a throw of 39.36m.

Ruralites’ Terrence Johnson 39.16m was second and Royston Ross, 37.33m, third.

Orin Daniels won the long jump with a leap of 5.98m.

Troy Williams, 5.83m, was second and Desmond Nicholson 5.45m, third.

Ruralites’ Seaforth won the 400m by clocking 50.70s and the 200m in 22.50s.

Also recording wins in the under-20 category were PSC’s Carlwyn Collins; Steve Nelson, who won the 100m in 11.10 seconds; Joshua Griffith, who won the 800m in 2:10.00s and Carlton Pitt, won the 400m in 52.30 seconds.

In the men’s 5000m PSC’s Dennis Horatio clocked  17:35.40s to win the event while Caribbean 10k male champion Cleveland Forde claimed the 800m in 1:56.10s, ahead of Cleveland Thomas’ 1:56.50.

In the women’s category, the 1500m was won by Caribbean 10 female champion Alika Morgan in 5:00.90s while Leota Bobb won the women 100m in 13.10 seconds.
