National shutdown order issued in Barbados

(Barbados Nation) A national shutdown order has been issued and all Barbadians must be indoors by 12:30 a.m. today.

The order has come from Judy Thomas, director of the Department of Emergency Management just minutes ago. She said this action was necessary as weather conditions were expected to worsen.

Barbados is now under hurricane warning with Tropical Storm Tomas packing maximum sustained winds of near 65 miles per hour, according to the weather bulletin issued at 11 p.m. yesterday. The first warning of bad weather came around 3 p.m. yesterday with an official advisory issued two hours later.

The National Hurricane Centre in Miami is predicting that Tomas could become a hurricane by early this morning as it passes near Barbados and moves across the other Windward islands.
