Neesa Gopaul case: Ministry withdraws sanction of QC teachers

Following a meeting this afternoon between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) the ministry has withdrawn letters of sanction it sent to three teachers of Queen’s College following an investigation into the school’s handling of the case of murdered teenager Neesa Gopaul.
A joint statement from the union and the ministry said they have “reached agreement that as a result of the disclosure of certain mitigating factors the sanctions dealing with denial of promotion for the three teachers has been withdraw.”
The three teachers are Candida Williams, Nadia Hollingsworth and Carol Marks. The letter of demotion sent to former head Friedel Isaacs still stands and GTU’s President Colin Bynoe last evening said that the union will meet Isaacs shortly to discuss the way forward.
With this new development the GTU has now pledged to fully support the National Schools Athletics Championships set to kick start tomorrow.
