Fleeing prisoner shot by cops, bystander wounded

A convicted prisoner was shot twice by police officers who opened fire at him as he jumped from a prison van outside the Camp Street prison around 3 this afternoon in a hair-raising episode that also resulted in a civilian being wounded.

The prisoner has been identified as Morvin Williams, 24, of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara. He sustained a gunshot wound beneath the left buttocks and one to the left knee.

The injured bystander 25-year-old Wayne Thompson sustained a gunshot wound to the right foot.

Both men are receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Hospital.

Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the police running behind the man discharging rounds.
