Construction defects associated with the Skeldon sugar factory as well as a lack of information on an environmental impact assessment for the Amaila Falls project are two concerns which would see both projects being revisited if the AFC wins next year’s general elections.
Alliance For Change (AFC) leader Khemraj Ramjattan, who will appear on Christopher Ram’s Plain Talk programme 6 this evening on Channel 7, while responding to a comment made by President Bharrat Jagdeo in relation to the Skeldon factory, stated that if the party is elected to serve come 2011, a decision will be made to review the factory and its operations. He said that such a decision will be have to be made following analysis and technical advice from the experts who participated in construction of the factory.
As regards the Amaila Falls project, Ramjattan noted that to date the party remains unaware of information regarding an environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the project, as well as if a social impact analysis has been undertaken regarding the project. He said that the EIA should give an indication “if at the end of it all, Guyanese would have to pay more for electricity”.
He said that for the investors in the project, they are expected to benefit from the project, by at least US$0.18 to $0.20c per kilowatt.
The AFC has no knowledge of such information (EIA), Ramjattan reiterated noting that if the project does not get underway by 2011, it will be reviewed, once the party is elected to govern the nation.
