Sand Creek woman fatally struck with hammer

A Sand Creek woman died some time yesterday afternoon after she was reportedly hit to the head with a hammer.

Her son has been taken into custody.

The dead woman has been identified as Ethel Andrew. Reports reaching this newspaper say that after the woman was dealt the blow, she collapsed and died a short time later. Andrew, this newspaper learnt, intervened in an argument between her son and another relative and was attacked as a result.

Commander of Police E&F Division David Ramnarine confirmed this afternoon that police had received a report about the matter. An investigation, he said, is ongoing.

It takes about 4 to 6 hours, depending on the condition of the trail and mode of transportation, to get to Sand Creek from Lethem, Ramnarine said.
