UK urged to cut migration

(BBC)  The British Government’s migration advisers have recommended cutting the number of skilled workers allowed into the UK from outside the European Economic Area by up to a quarter.

The government has pledged to halve net migration – the surplus of immigrants over people emigrating – over the next five years.

To help meet the target, ministers are capping the number of skilled workers.

The Migration Advisory Committee says the cap should be set at between 37,400 and 43,700 next year.

Last year, 50,000 skilled-work visas were issued.

The committee added that students and people migrating for family reasons would also have to be cut to meet the Government’s targets.
