Ramjattan urges Caricom probe of maternity deaths

Presidential candidate for the Alliance For Change (AFC) Khemraj Ramjattan today issued a call for Caricom to conduct an independent investigation into a recent string of maternal deaths.

He said that something has gone seriously wrong with the country’s health system resulting in women and babies dying.

Ramjattan, who along with a number of his colleagues including leader, Raphael Trotman picketed outside of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), said he does not trust the country’s local doctors not to be “prejudiced” if they are asked to conduct such an investigation, hence his call for Caricom to be involved.

There has been an upsurge in maternal deaths with eight women losing their lives since September and Minister of Health Dr Leslie Ramsammy admitted that there has been a spike in the deaths compared to recent years.

Meanwhile, Ramjattan said his party is demanding that the GPHC immediately dismiss convicted child molester Dr Vishwamintra Persaud while describing his continued employment there as a “national outrage.”
