Bartica loses power after fire

All of Bartica was plunged into darkness earlier this morning following a fire at the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) station in the Cuyuni/Mazaruni community.

A resident told Stabroek News that the fire started at around 4:20 am and it was the quick action of the firemen at the recently opened fire station which averted disaster.

“if it wasn’t for the firemen the entire block may have gone up in flames,” the resident said.

The damage was contained to the interior of the power station which is badly scorched and the resident said they have since been told that they would be without power for the next three days.

It was noted that for some time residents have been complaining about the overloading of the engine at the power station which would result “in the engine tripping out and steady we would get blackout for about ten minutes or so until it come on back.”

Bartica is well-known as the gateway to the mining industry.
