A man accused by his employer of stealing a quantity of footwear was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of $100,000 after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Ganesh Singh is that between December 16 and 17 at Regent Street, he stole a quantity of slippers and sandals valued $382,000, property of Dhanmattie Seeram.
The 21-year-old defendant of 30 Coverden, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.
Attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar who represented the defendant made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no antecedents, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed address and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.
According to Zafar, his client is being wrongfully accused of an offence of which he is innocent, adding that the details of the matter will be ventilated at the trial.
The prosecution had no objection to the accused being granted his pretrial liberty. After hearing the case, the magistrate placed Singh on bail in the sum of $100,000.
