Twenty-three truants picked up in Bartica

The Region Seven RDC said it picked up 23 truant children in Bartica when it conducted an exercise on Wednesday.

According to a press release, the children were picked up between Byderabo and the Bartica/Potaro Road. A team comprising Regional Probation Officer Jocelyn Gomes, Representative of the Women’s Affairs Committee and Counsellor Mrs Khan, Welfare Officers Zulfikar Hack and Marilyn Wyatt, Nichola Anderson, Police Officer Sears, Regional Information Officer Cianna Persaud and Mr Griffith of the Bartica Policing Group hosted the exercise. It was carried on National Truancy Day under the theme ‘Every child has a right to be educated,’ the release said.

The welfare officers issued two warning letters in two instances and another two cases were referred to the probation officer for further action. The RDC said checks will also be made to ensure that the children are attending school and checks are done monthly in all schools. It also said the campaign is ongoing countrywide.

The region also hosted a counselling session for parents at the Bartica Research centre to educate parents and children on the importance of education.
