Unidentified canal corpse buried

The unidentified man who was found floating in the canal between Vlissengen Road and Irving Street, near Church Street three weeks ago was given a simple burial at the Good Hope cemetery yesterday.

Stabroek News was told that the authorities were forced to bury the man since no relative came forward to identify him.

Police had asked for assistance from the public in identifying him but to no avail. It is believed that the dead man was overseas based or resided somewhere in the interior.

The man, who was of African descent, was found around 10.50am on July 15 by two lads playing ball.

He appeared to be in his mid-50s. The body was clad in cream-coloured chequered pants with a black belt and a pair of Timberland boots. From all reports, there were no marks of violence on the body.
