A Red Dragon Sports Bar security guard accused of punching a woman in her face, causing her to lose a tooth in the process, was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000 bail when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It is alleged that on October 16 at Georgetown John Burnette unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Rovila Dillon.
The 56-year-old of 59 D’Urban Street, Lodge, pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious wounding when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant was partying with friends at the Red Dragon Sports Bar when the defendant who is known to her, approached and tried to restrain her from dancing. According to Harvey, the woman resisted and the accused then dealt her a punch to the face and knocked out a tooth. The matter was reported to the police station and the man was subsequently arrested and charged for the offence.
Burnette’s attorney made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no previous convictions, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed address and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.
The prosecution had no objection to the bail application made by the lawyer.
The accused was later granted his pretrial liberty in the sum of $75,000 and ordered to return to court on November 23.
