Cart man snatched woman’s chain, bag

A man who allegedly stole a gold chain and a number of items from a woman was on Friday placed on $35,000 bail after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Paul Richards is that on November 16 at Georgetown, he stole from Cornea Singh one gold chain, a purse, a quantity of cash and other items valued $27,000.

The horse cart operator of 205 Middle Road, La Penitence pleaded not guilty.
In giving the facts of the case, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainant was walking along the road when suddenly the defendant pounced on her, relieving her of the items mentioned on the charge.

According to Telford, the accused first snatched the complainant’s chain after which he relieved her of the purse she was carrying at the time containing the other items.

The prosecution had no objection to Richards being granted his pretrial liberty but requested that bail be granted in a substantial sum.

He was later admitted to $35,000 bail and ordered to return to court on November 29 for reports and fixtures.
