Natural Sciences dismantle Health Sciences…on basketball court

At the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday the Faculty of Natural Sciences lit the baskets on fire with a barrage of shots on their way to a 95-45 blowout of the Faculty of Health Sciences in the semi-finals of the University of Guyana Inter-Faculty Basketball Competition.

The defending champions Natural Sciences continued their unbeaten run and advanced to the finals of the competition following their unprecedented 50 points trouncing of Health Sciences, thanks to a solid well-rounded team performance from the starting five and the players coming off the bench.

Their points were mostly evenly distributed but the consistency of their guards Hugh Arthur and Stryon Obermuller stood out and proved vital as the team strived to surpass the 100 points mark.

The pair delivered another sterling performance and Arthur led the scoring once again with 24 points, while Obermuller added 18 to the team’s massive total.

The semi-final encounter began slowly as both teams totalled only seven points in the first five minutes. However the tempo quickly accelerated and some swift fast break lay-ups from Natural Sciences’ centre Kadeem Jacobs and the agile Arthur gave them their first run of the game and commenced the blowout.

Everyone in the Natural Sciences lineup pitched in and aided in annihilating Health Sciences, including their forward Leron Jackman, who delighted the supporters shortly after he came off the bench with a reverse lay-up and a two-handed slam.

Also getting in on the action was Semyon Fung, who dropped two huge shots from way beyond the arc and pushed Natural Sciences ahead at the halftime  which ended 44-15.

Led by Arthur, Natural Sciences came out of halftime and continued where they left off  by playing as a unit. Arthur got the ball rolling in the second half with one of the many jumpers he unleashed over the Health Sciences defenders.  This was followed shortly after by another Fung special from his sweet spot on the three-point line.

Natural Sciences Samuel Thompson was not left out of the points sharing with his 14, after he dominated the low post and placed himself on the highlight reel,  putting it down in the Health Sciences paint after a fast break.

As Health Sciences began to visibly tire, Natural Sciences closed the affair with a 13-0 run.

Fung and Jamol Thompson also managed to attain double figures for Natural Sciences with 12 points apiece, while the leading scorers for Health Sciences were Richard Bryden and Steven Broodhagen with 13 and nine points respectively.

In the other semi-final, Social Sciences lost to Technology 58-35 with Richard Mohandatt leading  for Technology with a game high 14 points.
