-District 10 win march past

Linden’s District No. 10 with 135 points was yesterday adjudged the winner of the march past at the opening ceremony of the National Schools, Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships at the Guyana National Stadium.

Shining in their black and gold outfits, District 10’s athletes came in ahead of the yellow and green attired District Six which gained 126 points.
District Seven was third with 123 points.

The teams were judged by a three-man panel, which awarded points to the districts based on their uniformity, alignment, coordination and banner.

Following the win, Regional Chairman of Region 10, Mortimer Mingo, expressed his delight and stated his confidence in the contingent’s ability to progress further with similar stellar performances as they continue to participate in other aspects of the championships.

“We are ecstatic about being adjudged the best team for the march past and we would like to most sincerely thank the Linden Fund for partnering with the region to supply the track suits for the team, because this, I know, would have contributed to the team winning, Mingo stated.

He added:”And now we are confident that we will come out champions this year and so we are looking forward to very clean and exciting competitions over the next few days.”
The event got off to an extremely late start.

When the opening ceremony finally got underway yesterday chaired by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Pulandar Kandhi, President of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), Colin Bynoe, Minster of Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony, and the Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh all made remarks.
His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo, made a brief appearance before leaving to deal with “other commitments of national importance,” Baksh remarked.

He was scheduled to officially declare the championships open but this was done by Baksh instead. The ceremony also featured the lighting of the torch which was done by students from the North Georgetown.

Additionally there was a brief cultural presentation by Diamond, Grove, Mocha, Peter’s Hall and Providence Primary Schools.  After that,  six of the track races got underway last night, and unofficial reports are that Rupununi’s District Nine, made a clean sweep of all the races ran.  Individual results were not available up to press time.   The swimming events also got underway at the Castellani Swimming Pool yesterday but up to press time completed were not available.
