Wheelchair-bound grandma charged with drug trafficking

The 64-year-old grandmother accused of having 9 kilogrammes, 490 grammes of cocaine in her possession was today remanded to prison after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Maxine Cecelia Bax of 61 Eastern Park, New York City, USA denied the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when it was read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The wheelchair-bound US citizen returns to court on February 7 for the commencement of the trial.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Stabroek News today that the woman was being transported to the airport when the vehicle was stopped on the East Bank. Persaud said police received a tip-off and set up a roadblock to intercept the vehicle.

The woman was arrested along with another person in the vehicle and following investigations two other persons were arrested.
