(Jamaica Observer) A Guyanese man, who the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court heard overstayed his time in the island out of love, was on Monday fined J$10,000 or 30 days after admitting to breaching the Immigration Act.
Thirty-six-year-old Dwight Trim, who hails from Georgetown, was also sentenced to 12 months at hard labour — suspended for 12 months — for uttering a forged United States visa.
Trim arrived in the island some time last year to visit his Jamaican girlfriend and was given a one-month stay in the island but overstayed by over four months.
He was leaving the island on January 13 when the forgery and breach were discovered.
Attorney-at-law Morrell Beckford, who represented Trim, told the court in mitigation that his client had no intention of overstaying but his relationship had developed to the stage where he decided to stay.
While here, Trim met someone who told him they could sort out his extension here as well as get him a US visa, the court was told.
Trim, it was also heard, paid for the US visa fees at the bank and also paid the ‘middleman’ US$500 for the services.
