No funds available yet for Suriname hospitals

(De Ware Tijd) – As of now, the hospitals have not received any funding from the government yet to pay for their most pressing obligations such as the salaries for this month. When asked for comment, Health Minister Celsius Waterberg says that the Cabinet might decide on Tuesday about making an amount available that will cover the most pressing needs. And that makes the situation urgent. The hospitals claim that if they want to pay their workers on time, the necessary paperwork needs to be ready by the 15th of every month. This is not the case now, and they must hurry, assuming that the Cabinet approves the funds. Waterberg admits that February is a “short” month which is made shorter because of the February 25 holiday. “We will do our very best to settle this matter soon”, Waterberg says. Those who will not be pleased with this news are the hospital workers. DWT has learned that at least one hospital union is ready to take action if the workers are not paid by the end of this month.
