(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – To Suriname, the CARICOM is much more than a trade block and market for its goods, products and services. Besides the materials benefits, there are also many immaterial ones. When it comes to politics and the self-awareness of the people, it also has a positive effect. Mauro Tuur, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (HI), said this in an interview with this paper yesterday. He points out that Suriname has obtained more benefits from joining the CARICOM than just a bigger market for its exports. Both the consumer and the business community are benefitting, but Suriname’s capacity and expertise in areas such as trade negotiations have increased as well in the past 15 years.
