Trans Guyana guard shot to death

A Trans Guyana Airways security guard was early this morning shot to death by one of two men who torched a safe in the airline’s building at Ogle, East Coast Demerara and escaped with four firearms.

Dead is Solomon Burke, said to be in his fifties.

He sustained a single gunshot wound. According to reports reaching Stabroek News around 4:30 this morning two men walked into the airline’s compound after passing a barrier and confronted the security guard who they shot. They then proceeded into the airline’s building and torched a safe from which they removed two shotguns and two hand guns before fleeing the location.

Stabroek News understands that a female security guard was posted in a guard hut at the barrier but she was reportedly walking around the compound at the time and the police have since detained her for questioning.

Scores of passengers who turned up this morning to travel to the interior have been left stranded as the airline has since suspended all its operations as police conduct their investigations.

Burke’s body was removed from the location and is now at the Lyken Funeral home.

Police recovered a .32 spent shell at the scene.
