Universal Tigers roar past defending champs

The Universal Solutions Tigers of Berbice ousted defending champions, Trophy Stall from the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) 10/10 softball cricket competition in the quarter finals at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.

The Universal Tigers were in the hunt to surpass a paltry 93-run target set by Trophy Stall from their 10 overs with the loss of five wickets.

Universal Tigers in reply made 94 for three for the loss of three wickets, but not before facing a stiff opening bowling attack from Trophy Stall.

However, after surviving the first few overs, Universal launched an attacked of their own with the bat in an attempt to get ahead of the required run-rate.

As the matched approached the final three overs and with a spread field set by Trophy Stall, Universal settled for the ones and twos but remained behind the required rate until eventual Man of the match, Javed Mohamed blasted Universal to victory in the second last over.

Mohamed wrapped up the game with two needed off the last ball in the ninth over, which followed a six and a four in the two previous balls.

Mohamed blasted his way to a quick 39 runs, before being adjudged man of the match in what was the final game of the day, putting the lid on the GTT 10/10 quarter finals in entertaining fashion.

Universal Solution Tigers now head to the semi-finals to face Celebrity Times, who defeated Sandust XI by nine wickets in their quarter final clash.

Earlier in the quarter finals, Sandurst XI, batting first, posted 57 for nine off their 10 overs, but this target was quickly met by Celebrity Times, who accumulated 63 for one from six overs.

In other matches contested yesterday in the male quarter finals of the tournament, Wolf Warriors successfully defended a total of 116 for five when they held Adventure Sports Club to 73 for five after 10 overs.

The victory for Wolf Warriors put them in the semi-finals against Regal XI, who also defended a competitive total, when they made 119 for three against Affiance Storm.

Affiance Storm in reply to Wolf Warriors only managed 80 for five off their allotted 10 overs.

Heading to the semi-finals for the females after emerging victorious in the female quarter-finals are Trophy Stall Angels, who will go up against Lusignan, while Berbice All Stars will face Mikes Wellwoman in the female semi-finals.

The tournament wraps up today with both the male and female semi-finals and finals today at the National Stadium, Providence.
