Guyana donating to Japan recovery efforts

The Government of Guyana yesterday announced that it will be making a monetary donation of $20M (US$100,000) to support disaster relief efforts following the devastating Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquake and tsunami which struck Japan on March 11, 2011.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “This contribution is in recognition of the urgent humanitarian needs of persons living in Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and other areas also being affected by the nuclear crisis and will be made through the Japanese Red Cross, which currently has responsibility for receiving international donations on behalf of the Japanese Government. “

Japan has been a source of vital development assistance to Guyana. It funded the new New Amsterdam Hospital, major waterworks and the Caricom Secretariat HQ among others.
