NEW DELHI, (Reuters) – Captain Virender Sehwag and Australian David Warner blazed half-centuries to lift bottom team Delhi Daredevils to a 29-run victory over Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier league on Saturday.
Put in to bat first on a green pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, Sehwag (77 off 35 balls) and Warner (77 off 48) smashed 146 in just 11.4 overs for the opening wicket to power Delhi to a mammoth 231 for four.
The duo hit four sixes each and 15 boundaries between themselves against a listless Punjab attack to lay the platform for the huge total.
Sehwag hit Australian David Hussey for three consecutive sixes before holing out trying to clear the boundary for the fourth time in a row.
The Punjab outfit had a glimmer of hope during the chase until Shaun Marsh (95 off 46) was at the crease but his dismissal in the 18th over put the target out of reach.
Marsh hit half a dozen huge sixes and nine boundaries and added 72 for the second wicket with captain Adam Gilchrist (42 off 33) to keep Kings XI in the hunt for an unlikely win but it was not enough in the end.
Delhi stayed at the bottom of the table with their second win in five matches while the Punjab team are fourth with three victories from the same number of matches.
