Suriname confiscated 2.7M smuggled cigarettes last year

(De Ware Tijd) PANAMA CITY — In 2010, more than 2.7 million cigarettes that were imported legally into Suriname for transit but in the end ended up on the local market illegally were confiscated. That is more than twice the amount of 1.2 million that was confiscated in 2009. Statistics on among others illegally sold cigarettes in the Caribbean show that Suriname is an important link in the transit of products that finally end up on the market illegally through all sorts of tricks. Yesterday, they were presented at the conference with the theme: ‘Towards an America Free from Contraband’ as part of the second meeting of Customs chiefs from Latin and Central America and the Caribbean that is currently held in Panama.

De Ware Tijd recently reported on cigarettes that were seized in Nickerie after being smuggled from Guyana.
