Suriname customs seeking US$10M to fight smuggling

(De Ware Tijd) PANAMA CITY — Customs urgently needs US$ 10 million to purchase 4 extra container scans to deal with smuggling activities. Customs is especially anxious about the smuggling of drugs from Nieuwe Haven. The request had already been submitted to the previous government but not much was done. Customs chief August Van Hamme is in Panama where he attends the second meeting of Customs chiefs and security services from Central and Latin America and the Caribbean. The red thread throughout the conference is that countries in the region should collaborate to put a stop to illegal trade.
