A fine all-round effort from Donovan Nelson placed Jamaica in a strong position against Trinidad and Tobago after the conclusion of the second day of the three-day West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) under-19 tournament at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.
After resuming on 278-6 after the first day’s play Jamaican Teswayne Creary, 73, and Nelson, 26, added just nine runs before Creary fell for a well played 77.
Nelson then took over and guided the Jamaicans to a total of 320 all-out with a classy half century of 57.
Replying to the Jamaicans’ large total after winning the toss and electing to field, Trinidad were quickly pushed on the back foot when Oshane Walter managed a stunning run out that saw Christian Herrera departing for two runs with the score at 12.
The run out seemingly put some pep in the steps of the Jamaicans as their probing bowling spells proved too much for their Trinidadian counterparts with Nelson ripping through their batting lineup with bowling figures of four wickets for 41 runs.
Trinidad’s only batting resistance came from their captain Steven Katwaroo, 33 and Dwane Cockburn, 28, as they failed to reach the follow-on target of 184. They were bowled out for a meager score of 136 after facing 55 overs.
With their second innings underway, history repeated itself for the Trinidadians as Herrera was cleaned bowled for six with the score on 12.
However, a batting recovery looked unlikely for the Trinidadians as they ended the day on 52 for 3 with Akeal Hosein and Jovan Ali not out on 16 and one respectively.
James McDonald took the wicket of Keiron Joseph while Marquino Mindley took the wicket of Herrera and effected the run out of Cockburn.
