Labour unrest at Iamgold in Suriname

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – The Iamgold/Rosebel-management is obliged to observe the laws of Suriname. This is said by Parliamentarians Andre Misiekaba (MC/NDP) and Guno Castelen (NF/SPA) with regard to the continuous strike of laborers at the gold mining company. Last Monday, personnel went on strike to demonstrate its dissatisfaction with the introduction of a new work-schedule of 16-hour shifts. They urged general manager Paul Korpi to observe the labor Law in a public meeting of Parliament. Both parliamentarians who are members of the permanent commission of Labor, Technological Development and Environment (ATM) think it unacceptable that workers and the workers’ union have been excluded from deliberations. According to the 1963-Labor law, workers are allowed to perform for 8.5 hours a day. By midday, DWT learned that Rosebel-management and the Rosebel Gold Mines Workers’ Organization (RGWO) had started deliberations. This was confirmed by the Rosebel-spokesman.
