Bouterse’s office enquires about possible irregularities in judiciary

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – The Office of the President has started an inquiry into possible irregularities in the judiciary. On June 8, Eugene van der San, Director of Government and Administrative Affairs of the President’s Office, wrote a letter to the acting President of the Court of Justice, judge Cynthia Vaalstein – Montnor, in which he asks for “further information” about claims made by Dutch citizen Stanley Brug about the judiciary. In October 2010, Brug wrote to President Desi Bouterse, Parliament Speaker Jenny Geerlings – Simons and all Ministers and Parliamentarians, asking for an investigation into what he calls “abuses” by the courts. Brug claims in a 450-page document he has repeatedly sent to the President and Parliament that he was a victim of fraud, and that since February 1989 his case has not been handled in the proper way due to “corruption, incompetence and drunkenness with power” within the judiciary. The Court of Justice has not replied to the letter from the President’s Office yet.
