In a truly one-sided contest, Malteenoes hammered second division side Third-class by 241 runs, in the final first round match of the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) Queensway Cup limited-overs cricket competition at the Everest ground yesterday.
Malteenoes, led by former Guyana Under-19 captain and current national player Steven Jacobs, won the toss and chose to bat first on the traditionally good wicket for batting at the Camp Road venue.
Openers Nkoise Barker (58) and recent Guyana Under-19 representative Kwame Crosse (50) propelled the side to a great start with an aggressive opening partnership worth 123 runs, as they flayed the hapless Third-class attack.
When they were dismissed, the remainder of the Malteenoes batting line-up, which had in its domain other former Guyana youth players and senior players, aided the Thomas Lands side in compiling an impressive total of 320 for 4 of their allotted 50 overs.
Jacobs 44, Danny Narayan 71 not out, Dion Ferrier 48 and Kellon Carmichael 14 not out, were the batsmen responsible for the posting of the aforementioned score.
Third-class captain Trevor Hussain, who is also a well recognized scorer in the cricket fraternity, was the pick of bowlers with figures of 10-0-41-1.
In reply, the Third-class outfit basically didn’t have a reply – but rather a miserable procession, as they were bundled out for 79 in 30.2 overs, with Muneshwar Ramsapoor (12) the only batsman to reach double figures. Medium paces Sean Daniels (3-20), Carmichael (3-18) and off-spinner Ferrier 2-10 were the principal wicket-takers.
The victory meant Malteenoes will join Police Sports Club, Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO), Guyana National Industrial Co-operation (GNIC), Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Ace Warriors as the teams that qualify for the competition second round.
The competition continues today with the opening second round match between GYO and GNIC at Everest.
