T&T PM against punishing girl who posted obscene video

(Trinidad Express) Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar does not think that the 14-year-old girl who posted a verbally obscene video about her on two social networking sites should be punished.

She also plans to meet with the teenager.

The video, which was first posted on YouTube and then Facebook by the teen who gave her age as 25, verbally abused Persad-Bissessar and threatened that the Prime Minister could be killed with a sniper rifle and bombed.

Referring to herself as “Granny Quila”, she said she was forced to have her voice heard, given the curfew restrictions imposed in the St James and Cocorite communities, which have gravely affected her.

The teen also warned of possible riots in the country in response to the State of Emergency and curfew restrictions being enforced by law-enforcement agencies.

Attorney General Anand Ramlogan made a public appeal over the weekend for the teen to give herself up to the police. The teen has since apologised.

Speaking yesterday at the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission’s (T&TEC) ceremony to mark the installation of lights at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground, Wilson Road, Penal, Persad-Bissessar told those in attendance: “I saw in the newspaper today that there is a 14- or a 15-year-old girl, it is alleged that she made some abusive remarks about me on Facebook and the AG had talked about it, and said it was in the hands of the police and the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions).

“And then I’m reading today that this young girl has apologised on the Facebook. And I would like to say that I am a mother and a grandmother and this is a teenager, this is a child and I am sure you will agree with me when we say that I should meet her, that I should accept her apologies.

“And we should find out why, as a young girl she felt it necessary to do such a thing. I am not of the view in the circumstances that she should be punished in any way. I think first we should talk with her and see what help we can be, all these things are possible, she said.

She also took the time to wish citizens happy Independence Day and Eid Mubarak. She then went on to turn the light switch on at the Rock Road Recreation Ground, Penal Rock Road, Penal, where lights were also installed.
