Woman, 75, killed by police constable

 

A police constable is now under close arrest after he struck and killed an elderly woman in an accident in the city on Wednesday.

Eleian Harris, 75, of First Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital. According to police, the constable who hit Harris was not authorized to drive force vehicles.

Police said in a statement that the accident occurred at about 4:20pm at Smyth and Princes streets, Georgetown.

“Investigations revealed that motor vehicle PJJ 3478, owned by the Guyana Police Force and driven by a Police Constable, was proceeding along Smyth Street, when it is alleged that the driver failed to stop at the intersection and collided with motor vehicle PJJ 8888 and then struck the pedestrian who was standing on the eastern side of the road,” police explained.

The constable is under close arrest and is assisting with the investigation, police added.
