Jamaican policeman arrested for killing colleague

(Jamaica Gleaner) The police have reported that a special constable is in custody this evening, after he shot and killed a colleague at a dance off Waltham Park Road in Kingston last night.

Dead is Detective Constable Shawn Howe of the Clarendon Police Division.

A release from the Jamaica Constabulary Force says the special constable is being interviewed by detectives.

The Bureau of Special Investigations says it has already collected ten statements from persons who attended the dance. However, it is encouraging others who may have witnessed the incident to call 922- 7277 to provide statements.

Meanwhile, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has revealed that the special constable who committed the act is attached to the Flying Squad in Kingston.

It says Detective Constable Howe, who was attached to the May Pen Criminal Investigation Branch, was killed during an altercation with his colleague.

He was shot as he urinated in an open lot close to the location of the dance in the early hours of the morning.

And INDECOM says it is also investigating the shooting of 23-year-old Kemar Richards, otherwise called ‘Ganja’ during a joint police/military operation on Corlettes Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine this morning.

The police report that a 9mm semi-automatic pistol was taken from Richards.

INDECOM says preliminary investigations suggest that Richards was shot while in the custody of the joint police/military team.

INDECOM says anyone with information relating to both incidents should call 968-8875 or 968-1932. It says all information will be kept strictly confidential.
