Letter to Bajan newspaper: Guyanese facing hard times

(Barbados Nation) By Murtland Cadogan

As a visitor from Guyana, I am taking the time to share some concerns regarding the recently held elections in Guyana as well as on some wider societal issues of governance in that country.

At issue is the need to share with the Barbadian community some of the injustices that a significant proportion of the Guyanese population have had to endure over the past 19 years, including the results of the general election.

This letter is about how indifference to injustices being systematically meted out to a segment of society can erode the values of a society.

In Guyana’s case, the refusal of the diplomatic community in Guyana to speak out against racial discrimination and overt corruption in the body politic must be seen as an unspeakable tragedy.

This is the collective viewpoint of thousands of my fellow Guyanese.

I hope that my letter in this forum will create an opportunity for wider dialogue on an issue that is corrosive to any genuine effort towards achieving a just and secure society.
