Determining Suriname coup history seen as impossible with death of envoy

(De Ware Tijd) THE HAGUE – Suriname has lost part of its history with the dearth of former Ambassador Max Vegelin van Claerbergen (84), says Dutch Parliamentarian Harry van Bommel. Vegelin was Ambassador in Suriname at the time of the military coup on February 25 1980. He passed away in Zeist, the Netherlands last week. His knowledge about the role of the Dutch military attaché colonel Hans Valk in the coup will now be forever unknown. Several sources claim that Valk actively aided in the coup and that the Ambassador knew about this. The Dutch government still denies any involvement in the coup.
