Ex-cambio cashier sentenced to four years after fraud conviction

Ex-Swiss House Cambio cashier Patrick Pompey was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment, after being found guilty of fraudulently converting US$13,000, equivalent to G$2.6M, to his own use.

Pompey, 51, of J21-965 Critchlow Street Tucville, Georgetown, was charged in January last year, on the allegation that he misappropriated the money after being entrusted with it by Desa Slater to change into local currency for her. He had maintained his innocence since the charge was first read to him but was never granted bail in the matter.

Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, who presided over the matter at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, in handing down her ruling said that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, while adding that the evidence led was clear and compelling.

The trial, which commenced on July 13 last, ended yesterday, after which the Magistrate handed down the sentence.

The prosecution led four witnesses in the case.

The court was told that on January 26, 2010, at Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Slater with the money, Pompey fraudulently converted it to his own use and benefit.
