Bystander shot on Longden St after police struggle with assault suspect

A bystander was last evening shot on Longden Street after a gun went off during a struggle between a policeman and an assault suspect.

The police say that around 2040h last night Dwayne Dodson, 34 years, was shot to his left side.

Police said that investigations revealed that an armed police constable, who was on duty at the Mobile Outpost at Stabroek Market Square, had arrested a man following a report of an alleged assault made against him by a female and placed him in custody at the Mobile Outpost.

The police release said that while arrangements were being made to have the suspect taken to the Brickdam Police Station, he ran out of the Mobile Outpost in an attempt to escape but was recaptured after being chased by the police constable and public-spirited persons.

At Longden Street, while being taken back to the Mobile Outpost, the suspect attacked the police constable and attempted to take away his gun. A struggle ensued between the suspect and the police rank during which a round was discharged which struck Dodson, police said.

Dodson was taken to the GPHC where he has been admitted for medical attention.

The suspect in the assault matter is in police custody.
