The Guyana Power and Light Inc today said that lightning affected one of the two transmission lines linking the Garden of Eden power station on the East Bank and Sophia causing a complete 50Hz system shutdown in the Demerara Interconnected System (DIS).
The second transmission line which was out of service for maintenance was quickly returned to operation and power was restored to the affected areas, GPL said in a release.
Another fault developed at Unity Street, La Grange which affected consumers on the West Bank of Demerara, the release said.
“GPL’s technicians are working assiduously to correct the problem. Again, GPL encourages consumers to report all incidents of power outage and faults in the network, as the Company may not always be aware of such occurrences”, the utility said.
