Howes St man charged with attempting to murder daughter, 2

Magistrate Sueanna Lovell remanded a 34-year-old father of four accused of attempting to murder his two-year-old daughter, when he yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charges.

The court heard that on November 29 at Coberine Creek, North West District, Rawle Handy, of Lot 39 Howes Street, Charlestown attempted to murder Tiffany Handy. The man was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

On the said day, Handy and his partner argued and as a result the man allegedly took the toddler to the Creek, tied a belt tightly around her neck and forced her head under the water several times. Public-spirited persons rushed to her rescue and the child was taken to hospital.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the child and her mother are still traumatized and if the man is granted bail he is likely to interfere with them.

The magistrate remanded Handy to prison until January 26 when he is ordered to appear in the Mabaruma Magistrates’ Court.
