Three men die in Kitty, Corriverton fires

Two men died in a Kitty fire early this morning and another man perished in a Corriverton blaze around the same time.

Police today named the dead men as Cyril Robinson and Alfred Stephens of Public Road, Kitty and Humadat Phurkokatam of No.78 Village, Corriverton.

In a statement, police said that investigations revealed that around 0045h today at Public Road, Kitty, Georgetown, a blaze of so far unknown origin resulted in the death of pensioner Robinson, 90 years, and a relative, Stephens, 17 years.

Police said that investigations showed that neighbours observed the building occupied by the victims on fire and raised an alarm. Fire Service personnel responded and extinguished the blaze which destroyed the building and a neighbouring house.

The charred remains of Robinson and Stephens were later found amid the debris, police said.

The other fire, police say, occurred around 0100h today and resulted in the death of labourer,  Phurkokatam, 42 years. Police say that investigations revealed that neighbours observed fire coming from the building occupied by Phurkokatam, who lived alone, and raised an alarm. Fire Service personnel from Corriverton responded and extinguished the blaze. The charred remains of the victim were later found.
