Residents should mobilize to get something done about Le Repentir

Dear Editor,

Recently I was fortunate to see pictures of Arlington Cemetery in America and believe me, I was very emotional for quite a while after, with vivid memories of our own Le Repentir which is unfortunately the final resting place for many Guyanese citizens who have served this country with distinction. It is almost surreal the callous and uncaring way that our cherished and beloved have been treated. Where have we gone wrong? Most of my adult life I spent in the Lodge area, in close proximity to the burial ground as it is commonly referred to. It was so different decades ago.

It is almost uncanny how the authorities treat the populace and their acceptance of this. The time has long passed for this deplorable situation to be reversed. I implore the young leaders in our midst, who have shown testicular fortitude in recent times to organize and mobilize the residents of Georgetown and its environs in an effort, however temporary, to arrest this deplorable situation.

Virtually every household in Georgetown has a loved one buried in Le Repentir Cemetery, so those officials entrusted with the task of restoring it to its former state should respond.

Yours faithfully,
Lloyd Davidson
