CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Levern Spencer and Darren Sammy have been gifted parcels of land by the St. Lucia Government in recognition of recent achievements.
Government’s press secretary Darnley Lebourne said the two have been identified as outstanding sports personalities based on their exceptional achievements locally, regionally and internationally in their respective disciplines.
“Prime Minister Stephenson King and the Cabinet, in recognition of the achievements of these two sporting heroes have made decisions in providing Levern and Darren packages of 10,000 square feet of land and official passports,” said Government Press Secretary Darnley Lebourne.
“Over the past two weeks, Darren, through the National Housing Corporation, was presented with his plot of land within the Marigot Housing Estate Development. During that period government also finalised the processing of an official passport for Levern.”
The 26-year-old Spencer won a bronze medal for St. Lucia at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year in her pet event, the high jump.
It was the second bronze medal at the Games for the country. She holds the St. Lucia and Caribbean community record of 1.98 metres, which she cleared at the Georgia Invitational in the United States last May.
Sammy, the first St. Lucian to play for West Indies, was elevated to the post of West Indies captain last November, after the West Indies Cricket Board relieved opener Chris Gayle of the post.
He led West Indies to a rain-marred 0-0 draw in a three-Test series in Sri Lanka, and has been given the responsibility of leading the regional side until the end of this year’s home series in July. Sammy was handed his official passport at the Beausejour Cricket Ground last October 25 during a special ceremony to mark his ascendancy to the captaincy, while arrangements are being put in place to make a formal presentation to Spencer next month.
