“Duck” for Shiv as miserable start for Warwickshire continues

BIRMINGHAM, England, CMC – Veteran West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul completed a wretched County Championship debut for Warwickshire, falling for a “duck” as his side plunged to a 209-run loss to Hampshire inside three days on Saturday.

The Guyanese, who celebrated his 37th birthday on Tuesday, faced just five balls before edging a wide ball from left-arm seamer James Tomlinson to slip as Warwickshire slid to a paltry 98 all out, after being set 308 for victory.

Chanderpaul, who scored just one in the first innings, was one of three wickets to fall to Tomlinson (4-13) with the score on 19, as Warwickshire tumbled to 19 for five.

Starting the day at Edgbaston on 163 for four, Hampshire were bowled out for 416 with James Vince taking his overnight 33 to 145.

Warwickshire then lost opener Ian Westwood and William Porterfield both without scoring in successive deliveries at eight for two, to spark the rut.

It was a bad day all around for Caribbean players as Leeward Islands 20-year-old Chesney Hughes saw his Derbyshire fall to Northamptonshire by 165 runs at Chesterfield while former West Indies seamer Corey Collymore’s Middlesex went down to Kent by 69 runs at Canterbury.
