Muslim scholar remanded on three counts of sexual abuse

The Muslim scholar at the centre of the sexual molestation allegations was this morning remanded to prison on three counts of sexual activity with a child by abusing a position of trust.

Nezaam Ali known as ‘Muffi’ appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court where the charges were read to him.

The matter was heard in-camera and after about an hour of submissions from Ali’s attorney Vic Puran and Police Prosecutor Sergeant Moore, the magistrate refused bail.

The mother and other relatives of the children were present at court and the woman voiced frustration and anger at what had happen to her children.

The woman repeated to reporters that she was being shunned and threatened by fellow Muslims.

Meanwhile, supporters of the accused, including his mother were also present and launched a verbal assault on reporters.

The case will continue on February 9.
