Jamaica in big ganja bust

(Jamaica Gleaner) The Westmoreland police last night made a major dent in the drug trade when they seized compressed ganja weighing 1600 pounds with an estimated value of $20 million.

The operation was carried out on the compound of an automobile garage in Big Bridge around 8:30 p.m where four barrels containing boat fuel, a single-engine boat and five motor vehicles were also seized.

The contraband was found in the boat, on the ground and in motor vehicles.  The police believe the weed was to be transported to a larger vessel for shipment overseas.  Five men were arrested.

One is a Bahamian, who claims he came through the Sangsters International Airport on the weekend.  Also among those arrested is an 18-year-old male.  At least two persons reportedly escaped the police dragnet. The police are asking anyone who has any information that can lead to other arrests in connection with the case to call the Sav-la-mar police.
