Freed T&T man’s life ends with bullet to head

(Trinidad Express) Last July, Canute Douglas was given a new lease on life.
He walked out of the High Court a free man after spending more than seven years in prison.
Douglas had been jointly charged with Rajaie Ali for the murder of Armandey Huggins on April 27, 2004.
On July 13 last year Douglas was freed by Justice Hayden St Clair-Douglas after it was ruled that his confession was improperly obtained by police. Ali was also freed of murder in October 2011.
Speaking to reporters following his release then, Douglas said he was happy to be free.
But his new lease on life ended on Wednesday night.
Douglas was shot dead outside his family’s Clarence Trace, Valencia home around 11.30 p.m.
Police reports indicated that Douglas was standing in his yard when his wife, who was inside the house at the time, heard several gunshots.
When she exited the house she found Douglas lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head. He died at the scene.
Officers from the Valencia Police Post responded to the shooting.
The murder toll now stands at 209 for the year so far.
