The National Assembly is debating a motion of no confidence against minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee for the actions of the Police in the shooting to death of three protesters and the wounding of many others last Wednesday in Linden.
Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman ruled that the motion was properly before the House, being brought by Leader of the Opposition David Granger.
Granger had earlier withdrawn his request for leave of the Assembly to discuss the Linden shootings as a matter of urgent public importance, which the Speaker had granted.
It is likely that every member of the Government benches will speak against the motion. The Speaker said the debate may continue at another sitting if it cannot be concluded tonight. The Alliance For Change is also supporting the motion of no-confidence against Rohee.
Government members wanted more time to prepare for the debate and were not of a mind to proceed with the debate today. MP and Presidential adviser Gail Teixeira said there is no reference to no-confidence motions in the Standing Orders and therefore it was apposite to be guided from the experience of other jurisdictions.
