Ditch dug across Potaro Road in protest at its condition

Over 200 residents of Bartica this morning came out and dug a ditch across the Potaro Road cutting off access to the interior over its deteriorating state which has worsened recently with increased traffic as a result of the protest in Linden.

With the passage into the interior through Linden being blocked by protestors many persons had resorted to using the Potaro Road to gain access to the interior.

Resident Micha Williams told Stabroek News this morning that just before daybreak a huge ditch was observed in the road after a number of residents converged on the scene protesting the state of the road.

“The road has been bad for a long time but has been ignored while emphasis was placed on the road leading from Linden and now they have to come back to the same road,” the residents said.

He said that they were told that there was no budgetary allocation this year for the repair of the road and with the increased traffic -consisting of mostly huge trucks -the state of the road has gotten worse. He said that some residents also burnt tyres and at least one person was arrested by the police who are now out in their numbers even as residents continue to protest.
